About Me I am the mother of 3 boys; my oldest is autistic. My husband thinks it's weird that I'm Wiccan, even though he believes in: astrology, reincarnation, spirits, hauntings, UFOs, crop circles, and many other "new-agey" (or "old-agey" as I like to think) concepts. I'm currently unemployed, due to the fact that it would eat up my entire salary to pay for daycare. I'm a former technical writer and magazine editor, and the author of two published books (on packaging design) and a couple of software manuals. I turned 40 this year, and feel like the next phase of my life is starting, but I'm not sure in which direction I will go.
Music I like almost everything. On my iPod right now: Grateful Dead, Lily Allen, Led Zep, Aerosmith, Radiohead, Blur, Franz Ferdinand, Butthole Surfers, Camper Van Beethoven, Elvis Costello, Avril Lavigne, Grainbenders, Puffy Ami Yumi, and more.
Movies We don't get to go out to the movies much, but the last thing I saw in the theater was fairly girly - Becoming Jane. I saw a truly horrible movie on Lifetime this weekend called the Devil's Diary. I had to watch it because it starred two chicks from one of my favorite TV shows...
TV ...Degrassi! (I have to watch that, as I watched the original Degrassi Junior High) when I was in high school and college. I'm also a big fan of Big Love, Dexter, The L Word, Heroes, How I Met Your Mother, and Battlestar Galactica. I can't even adequately express how excited I am about the Bionic Woman premiere!
Books Almost all of them, except for "inspirational" Christian fiction (which my local library has recently devoted an entire section to, blah). Currently reading: The Devil, the lovers, and me: My life in Tarot, and Strange Son, with a couple of Mary Janice Davidson and Kelley Armstrong titles waiting in my book bag.
Likes Books, chocolate, parties, meeting new people, hanging out with the friends I made in college and have kept for 20 years now, lessons at Lissa's, nachos, watching my kids play outside, sleeping, going on dates with my husband (which happens about twice per year), girly spa things, coffee, and something else that few people like - fruitcake! Though only if it is made by my mother, who I also really like.
Dislikes Vegetables Brown Cars America's fascination w/ drunken teenage, no-talent "celebratties"
Hobbies Not many. I'm trying to learn to make my own jewelry, but I'm not very good at it, as one of my vices/ faults is...
Vices ...I have very little patience and I am easily frustrated. I'm too quick to judge people (but I have been working on that), I snap at my husband & yell at my kids too much. I overeat and don't exercise.
Virtues Loyal friend, open to new experiences, haven't axe-murdered anyone.
Heroes All of the extremely strong, bossy, opinionated, annoying women in my family and the men who put up with them. My friend Kathy, who dealing with her father's terminal illness, my friends Stephanie and Andie who have had the courage to leave bad relationship and are able to imagine a happier and better future for their families. My oldest son, who is almost always happy and smiling, even though he can't communicate with the rest of the world. Jacquie M, a woman in my community who almost single handedly started are area's biggest Autism support group. And sometimes - me.

    Christian Misery

Monday, September 24, 2007, 12:46 PM CST [General]

Ok, I don't blog much, so please bear with me (or, rather, my post).

One of the odd things about me is that I frequently listen to Evangelic Christian radio programs; partly because I like to hear what the far right is up to, and partly to gather bits of "wisdom" to fling at my holy-roller, super-judgemental cousin.

During a broadcast this weekend, the speaker was explaining that there are so many "miserable, sad, sick, poor people" in the world because "God wants us to be miserable so that we will give up our worldly concerns and turn to him."

    What the Hex?

I don't intend to bash Christ or those who follow him, but I don't understand the appeal of a religion that espouses the whole "all humans are miserable sinners" rhetoric.

OK, I'm done. Have a great day everyone. And be thankful that you're part of a spiritual tradition that promotes joy instead of misery.

I am the mother of three boys (my oldest is autistic); I live in Central Illinois; I've been a pagan/goddess worshipper for over 20 years, but I've been on hiatus for about the last 7 years, due to being too busy!
