Thursday, August 21, 2008, 01:14 PM EST [General]
Rest assured, the U.S. men's basketball team is not toying with its opponents. As much as it may appear that Team USA can do so, it wants to deflate teams as fast as possible. The U.S. wasn't able to separate itself from Australia until midway through the second quarter of its quarterfinal game on Day 12 at Wukesong Indoor Stadium. But from the second quarter on, the Aussies were as demoralized as a team with remote medal hopes can be. The U.S. outscored Australia 91-61 from the second quarter on, letting up only when the final buzzer sounded at 116-85. "They played us tough, especially in the first half," U.S. guard Kobe Bryant said. "It was something we had to adjust to." The adjustment clearly worked: the Americans used a 14-0 run to start the second half. By the time Australia's Patrick Mills hit a 3-pointer four minutes in, the lead was 69-46. There was no looking back for the U.S. That about sums up the tournament for U.S. opponents: you can hang close (it was 25-24 U.S. after the first period) if the Americans shoot poorly (9-of-21 or 43 percent shooting in the first quarter and 16 percent 3-point shooting in the first half), but eventually Team USA will bust out (it ended with 57 percent shooting on the night). And they're blowing away the toughest Olympic field ever. After running roughshod through preliminary play and this quarterfinal match, comparisons between the 2008 U.S. team and original 1992 Dream Team are running rampant. But that Olympics started the international wave of talent that is cresting in Beijing. Among the three semifinal opponents of the U.S. at the 1992 Barcelona Games, just five players owned NBA contracts. Four years later in Atlanta, six foreign NBA players made the semifinals with their national squads. There was a dropoff in 2000 (two) and 2004 (four), but among the other three teams in the Beijing semis -- Spain, Lithuania and Argentina -- 11 players compete in the NBA. "I know (the competition is) a lot better, more teams are a lot better," U.S. guard Dwyane Wade said. "This team that we just beat (Australia) was a good team; they're a very good team. They didn't have enough to get over the hump with us, but they're a good ball club." The accolades in the men's final four are impressive. In one semifinal is Lithuania against Spain. The former is now 11-3 in its last two Olympics and playing in its fourth consecutive semifinal (fourth in 2004 after bronze in 2000 and 1996). Spain is the defending world champion, 11-2 in its last two Olympics, and 21-3 in its last three major international tournaments (the 2006 Worlds, 2007 European Championships and 2008 Olympics). And playing against the U.S. will be Argentina, which is the defending Olympic gold medalist, 11-3 in its last two Olympics, and 18-5 in the The U.S., meanwhile, is looking to win its first semifinal game in an Olympics or Worlds since the 2000 Sydney Games. "We know that in the past we slipped in this game," Wade said. "Two years ago we slipped in this game. But I think this team is totally past that and focused. It's going to be a tough game no matter who we play, but if we keep focused and do what we normally do -- stick together, play defense 'til the end -- then we'll be fine." Jason Kidd is the only player on Team USA who has never lost a game while representing his country. Thus, he's the only one on the team with an Olympic gold medal from the 2000 Sydney Games. He says this "In 2000, I don't know if we were as hungry because we were the favorite," he said. "And the world was just getting better at the game of basketball. This team is hungry because of the things that have happened in 2004 and 2006. "These guys are hungry, they want to win." Eres fan de la seleccion Mexicana de soccer?

BEIJING - They're not getting paid. There's free room and board and transportation and tickets to Olympic events, but not a nickel in the wallet from USA Basketball for anyone. You heard that right: The NBA superstars who have come here to take back the basketball supremacy that they see as their birthright are playing for nothing other than pride; pride in themselves, pride in their sport, pride in their country. And they're loving every minute of it. NBA officials are thrilled about how things have gone for a team that had a lot to prove coming into the games. Even before the medal games are played, the feeling is that this team has already redeemed itself. They've been living in a hotel in Beijing along with the U.S. women's team. But they've hardly holed up there, even knowing that everywhere they go in this sprawling city they would be mobbed, in the words of guard Chris Paul, "like the Beatles." They've been to the Great Wall. They've gone sightseeing. They go shopping. They sign autographs tirelessly and have posed for pictures with literally thousands of locals and tourists. And on every opportunity, they're showing up at other sports venues, cheering on their American Olympic teammates. "I've never seen anything like this before," a high NBA official who's been to every Olympics going back to the original Dream Team appearance in 1992 in Barcelona. Back then, every athlete from every country wanted to see Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and the greatest team ever assembled just because of who they were. But over the years, as the Dream Team deteriorated in groups of self-centered individuals who felt as if they were doing the country a favor by playing - and playing badly - the basketball team never felt like a real part of the American delegation. Not so here. On Monday, when the Redeem Team beat Germany into the court, half the U.S. Olympic Swim Team showed up to watch. But instead of the swimmers clamoring to meet the basketball players, some of the world's most famous and highly paid athletes couldn't wait to meet Michael Phelps and invite him into their locker room. He brought swim goggles for everyone, and many of the players wore them out of the arena and onto the bus. Two days later, a half dozen team members got up not much past dawn to watch Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh dig and spike their way into the gold-medal round of the beach volleyball tournament. "They're getting out every day," the NBA guy told me. "And they're having the time of their lives." What a contrast from 2004 and Athens, where the team holed up on a docked luxury liner, lost early, started grousing about everything, and slunk home with a bronze medal. That team didn't want to be in Athens, didn't want to be together, couldn't wait to get home. After losing in Athens, the Americans still hadn't fully grasped that it wasn't enough to just show up. And too many NBA players didn't want to give up their summers to play for free against international teams for which they had no respect. That changed in 2006 when the United States lost in the World Championships. Finally, they got the point: If they didn't dedicate themselves to the task, they weren't going to get back to the top. The big names signed on - Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade - and they checked their egos at the door. Jerry Colangelo built the team and Mike Krzyzewski, a college coach, molded it. By the time they came to Beijing, they were a dedicated unit determined to show the world not just that American NBA players are the best in the world, but also that they're not the self-centered, spoiled brats that many people thought they were. It's easy to laugh at the old sayings about losing: it reveals character, it teaches valuable lessons. The sayings are, after all, invented by losers. You don't hear people who have never lost talking about the value of losing. But in this case, it's true. In losing their world title, the Americans found they'd lost a lot more. The biggest loss was the idea of belonging to a real team, a group of stars that saw the group goal as more important than individual glory, a dozen very rich men going halfway around the world for no pay to pay for their own pride and that of their country. Even with their dominating 31-point win over Australia Wednesday, they haven't won anything yet. But no matter how they do from here on in, the NBA official felt the mission has already been accomplished. "They're going to go back home and tell all their teammates what a great experience this was and how much fun they had," he said. "After Athens, nobody wanted to play for the national team. Now, everybody's going to want to play in the Olympics Breaking News: Gail Kim Jumps Ship To WWE

A Bryant, Wisconsin woman has been accused of beating up her husband in an incident involving a knife and a large number of tomatoes. Katherine H. Kranz, 48, was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and misdemeanor battery, all with domestic abuse enhancers. She was ordered to stay out of taverns and possess no weapons. Officers responded to a call from a neighbor of the Kranzes on Sunday. Russell D. Kranz, 46, who had fled there seeking help, was bleeding from the head, according to the criminal complaint. He said his wife had him on the floor and repeatedly hit him and possibly stabbed him with a knife as she made slashing motions at him. Russell Kranz said he begged his wife not to kill him and was struck in the face with large numbers of tomatoes, the complaint stated. Sheriff's officers reported tomatoes were crushed "everywhere" in the residence. Katherine Kranz said her husband was ticked off because a drink she made him wasn't strong enough, and that he started the fight by calling her names and hitting her in the face. She said he hurt his head by falling off a lawn chair while drunk. --Originally reported by The Fond du Lac Reporter. "It was a fairly minor crime with a fairly major consequence." Those were the words of Eaton County Undersheriff Fred McPhail, describing a series of events Monday morning that led from the theft of less than 500-dollars worth of children's clothing to a woman being crushed in a trash compactor. Police were called at about 10:15 a-m Monday by an employee of the Goodwill Store who said a woman was screaming, stuck inside the trash compactor, which was on at the time. That woman, Tyree Monique Tate, was extracted and transported to a nearby hospital, where she died Tuesday morning. Earlier, police received a call advising them of a shoplifting in progress at a T-J Maxx store in the Lansing Mall. Two women had fled from T-J Maxx after spraying a store security officer in the face with a pepper spray to get away. The two crossed Saginaw Highway to the Goodwill Store. They stopped at the store's large, green trash compactor, designed to be fed from the store's rear loading dock. McPhail said it appears Tate ignored the multiple "Keep Out" signs and climbed into the compactor, which was not on at the time. The sister was found hiding near the compactor, and tried to run from police but was quickly arrested. The sister was uncooperative and told police she barely knew Tate and didn't know where she was. At the same time, a Goodwill employee turned the compactor on to use it. McPhail said, "I think it's very likely that if she had told police where her sister was, they would have arrested (Tate) and she wouldn't have been crushed." --Originally reported by The Lansing State Journal. After Ana Iris Perez-Hernandez was run over and killed in front of her young son, Miami police needed to find the driver. The victim's pasta pointed the way. Perez-Hernandez, 25, had been carrying her homemade spaghetti in tomato sauce in a plastic container when she stepped into the street and a Toyota Corolla plowed into her, hurling the lunch into the air. Miami Detective Lorraine Rubio identified the suspected driver when she found the Corolla -- and remnants of the pasta -- several hours later. Rubio said, ''It was underneath the grill, and there were still pieces on the bottom right part of the windshield. It told me that, at least, the vehicle was possibly involved in the accident. There aren't too many vehicles with spaghetti on them.'' Police have arrested security guard Jose Santiago, 62, who admitted he had been ''very tired and sleepy'' after working the graveyard shift and might have hit something. --Originally reported by The Miami Herald A Tyler, Texas man accused of growing marijuana in an alleged cost-saving move has been jailed on felony possession charges. John Daniel Miller the Third, 55, told deputies he knew they were coming "sooner or later" and he was cultivating his own marijuana because the cost of buying the illegal substance had gone up. A tip led officers to some rural property, where several marijuana plants -- encircled by old tires -- lined the driveway. Deputies confiscated more than 70 plants worth about 100-thousand dollars. --Originally reported by The Tyler Morning-Telegraph Days like these - A fun poem by me

Days like these I'm sure that you have days like these When nothing goes quite right When the dog chews up the daily post And the kids do nowt but fight.
I'm sure that you have days like these When the toast you grill is black When the tea you drink has leaves in And milk is the one thing that you lack.
I'm sure that you have days like these When the laundry comes out pink When you turn on the tap and get an overflow And find there's Lego in the sink.
I'm sure that you have days like these When everything you wear makes you look fat When your hair just won't lie down straight And you've no occasion for a hat.
I'm sure that you have days like these When you argue with your boss When your work just isn't up to scratch And you just couldn't give a toss.
I'm sure that you have days like these If you do, remember all that I've said And if your day starts out like this Sod ‘em all and go straight back to bed.
It Worked
Thursday, August 21, 2008, 11:05 AM MST [Magickal Workings]
Well paint me green, the spell was successful. I knew it would work, but , man! it worked like that *snaps*! Let me begin by telling you that Alan is a finish carpenter. That means he installs cabinets, countertops, doors, wainscoating, panneling, nit-picky trim as well as crown and base molding. He's a foreman for his company. Yesterday, Alan's boss gave him three bits of good news. The first was that they were going to utilize his backround and skill to help them in a Las Vegas job they're doing. They want him to come in a few days a week to go over plans with the shop foreman to make sure what's been drawn on the plans will work in reality. There are a lot of kids graduating from school these days who can plan buildings and interiors on a computer all day long, however, what works on a computer, may not work in the real world, you know, the one subject to gravity! He's had lots of experience with that. He's been thinking about being an engeineer in that respect for a while and this would give him the opportunity to see if it's a viable option. Second, They want to make him the lead foreman on a hotel/casino project here in Phoenix on one of the Indian Reservations. The job has been projected at $9 million! The Sheraton job he's on now (and is the lead foreman for) is just under $3 million. The final thing is his vacation. Now, he's a Union carpenter and that means that each pay period, a percentage of his salary is put into an account and he gets a check twice a year to be used any way he wants-either for vacation or other wise. If you don't work, you don't get paid for the day(s) you miss. You just have to make it work that week. Anyway, his boss told him that he'd make sure he was paid for the week we'll be on vacation! That's a big deal. It means that the owners of the company are going to pay him for the days he'll be gone. Highly unusual! They love him and want to make sure they keep him. AZ is a Right-To-Work state, meaning you work at the employer's pleasure. When a job finishes, if your services are no longer required, you go to the union hall and put yourself on the "available"list for jobs and other union contractors will call you. Alan's company has a core crew of guys (and a few women) they keep busy year round so they don't lose them to another contractor. Alan is ALWAYS the last one standing. The company really takes care of their employees.Alan's been with them for about 6 years. I'm thrilled that his company thinks so highly of him. He works hard and takes such pride in his job. It shows and the owners appreciate it both verbally and when bonus time rolls around. Lots of explanation, but, Alan will have a chance to spread his vocational wings, is being put in charge of another major project and the owners are footing the payroll bill for his vacation. Now THAT'S what I call abundance!! This was a group effort and I thank all of you who participated in this wonderful project. I hope abundance comes to you in multiple ways. Bright Blessings "The Perfect Wedding" has changed our lives!!
